Here are some the things I'm considering as I shop:
- Hardiness - the thing will need to survive the occasional hunting/kayak/canoe/hiking trip, as well as the county fair and the occasional construction site.
- Versatility - if it could please take lovely pictures of my real estate listings, while still providing beautiful pictorial memories of mountainscapes and life-like action shots. Last weekend I was trying to take pictures of my niece during her western pleasure class. I felt a little bit like a sniper setting up for a shot. I had to lead the horse by an estimated distance, push the button, keep moving the camera along with the horse while the screen went black and it thought about taking the picture, then wait for the picture to appear on the screen and hope that Alli and Red were actually mostly in the frame! How annoying!
- Size - I don't want to pack around a beastly thing.
- Zoom - I only have digital zoom right now, and it is a big disappointment!
- Screen - it would be nice to have a display screen that flips around so I can get a glimpse at what is going to be in the picture even if I can't be behind the camera. Since Casey and I are usually off galavanting on our own, nearly every one of our photos together is taken using the self timer or by one of us holding the camera out a arms length and taking the picture. Sometimes we miss.
- Cost - I don't want to spend a ton. I was thinking under $350. Maybe even under $300.
So far I've read a few reviews and am leaning toward the Canon PowerShot A640. Well, that's kind of a lie. I saw it at Costco and liked it, so I've read about 10 reviews, but have not read up on anything else and am scared that I'll just buy this one because it seems good so far, and I'm too daunted by the options to start broadening my scope and reading reviews of other products. Help!

All I know is that whatever you decide to go with, beachcamera.com is most likely the cheapest!
I love my Kodak EasyShare C663, it has great reviews and I have not ONE complaint with it. All the features work great. It is a cheaper camera (certainly not a Canon) but I take photos that are just as nice or nicer with it, as I have seen taken with a Canon. I like Kodak's simplicity and easiness of use. It has huge, clear videos nicer than my friends video camera and I bought a 1 gig card for $14 from the same site. It holds 500 pictures or a lot of video. One card didn't even get filled up with my 5 days of Yellowstone pictures and all those videos.
how about a sketch pad. they come in all different sizes...
Thanks for the tips, Chatty!
As for G...well...thanks...and when you find a point and shoot sketch pad let me know! :)
It's one thing not to have to call your big sister to figure out how to get songs on your ipod. It's another thing entirely not to invite her to read your blog. I just accidentally stumbled across this.
As for cameras, my only advice is make sure you are happy with the recovery time between shots.
Both of our cameras are Canons and we have been very happy with both.
My favorite site for camera reviews is dpreview.com - they go into much detail and at the have comparisons with other similar models. Don't worry about # of megapixels, I've printed 8x10s from my 3.2mp Powershot, and you could hardly tell, so anything above that will be great.
Unfortunately, as far as I understand it, all point and shoot digitals will have the shutter lag to some degree just because of the way they operate; the only way to get around that is to get an SLR, which unfortunately is well over $300! ;) And you wouldn't want to take it on a boat either, probably. If you read all the detail on the reviews on that site, it does often comment on the amount of shutter lag on each particular model.
You might want something with more zoom...I'm just looking at the Panasonic DMC-TZ2 or TZ3 which has 10x zoom (as opposed to 4x on the Canon, I believe). Looks like they're right around $300, and they say on the TZ3 review that the shutter lag has been significantly improved.
So...that's all I have to say, ha ha! Good luck!
Ok I shall throw in my two bits. Not that you need it from what I just read. I just like to babble so......I love my Sony cybershot and the selling feature for me was no lag before the shot. I don't miss the kiss cause the shot is taken instantaneously. However I want my next camera to be a fancy shmancy $3000.00 Canon. My friend has one and it blows every other camera I have ever seen out of the water. You can hold down the shutter button and it takes a few pics a second! It is amazing. However it is huge and clunky and 12 megapixles which is not nessesary at all. I think it all comes down to what you are looking for in your picture taking.
Good luck!!!!!
